Europe’s Human Rights Defenders: “We have faith in the Armenian Ombudsman”

Armen Harutyunyan is capable of advancing the country considerably in terms of human rights defense due to his activities as Armenia’s Ombudsman. This opinion was expressed by Christian Le Roux, Director of Cabinet of the French Ombudsman, in an interview with ArmeniaNow.

Le Roux is visiting Armenia to participate in the Twinning project, the purpose of which is to provide Armenia with technical and legal assistance in the sphere of human rights defense. The project will be implemented within the framework of the European Union’s ‘European Neighborhood Policy’ Program and a program to be carried out by the Spanish and French Ombudsman’s offices; a representative of the French office and a group of experts both from France and Spain will be working in Armenia.

The period for the implementation of the 1 million Euros worth program is 18 months, as reported by Christian Le Roux.

According to him, Armen Harutyunyan enjoys fine reputation in European human rights organizations and his eager activities as Armenia’s Ombudsman have been highly praised by his European colleagues.

“We believe that thanks to Armen Harutyunyan not only will the Twinning project be a success, but also Armenia will have serious achievements in the sphere of human rights defense,” said Le Roux. He also pointed out that Spain and France are countries of rich democratic traditions and their experience will be of great use to Armenia.

The project presentation ceremony was attended by Chief Cabinet of the First Deputy Ombudsman of Spain Carmen Comas-Mata Mira, French Ambassador to Armenia Serge Smessov, Head of the European Commission Delegation to Armenia Raul de Luzenberger, Head of the OSCE Yerevan office Sergey Kapinos, representatives of other international organizations and diplomats.
