Republican premier: Tigran Sargsyan joins the majority party

Armenia’s Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan has become a member of the governing Republican Party of Armenia. This was confirmed to ArmeniaNow by the party’s spokesman. Eduard Sharmazanov said that several days ago Tigran Sargsyan applied for party membership and within several days the party’s bodies made a positive decision and accepted the premier to their ranks.

Tigran Sargsyan served as Chairman of the Central Bank of Armenia from 1998 to April 2008 when he was appointed Prime Minister of Armenia.

Many predicted that Sargsyan, then viewed as a neutral figure for this post, would not stay long in his office. While he regularly hears criticism from either side of the political fence, Sargsyan is also viewed by many as a reformist head of government not least due to several major changes in Armenian reality that he has managed to accomplish (to mention just one – the enforcement of seatbelt use).
