Armenian president pays official visit to Turkmenistan

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan has paid an official visit to Turkmenistan during which a number of documents concerning the development and deepening of cooperation between the two countries were signed.

In Ashgabad Sargsyan held negotiations with his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The two leaders issued a joint statement following their talks in which they said they had reached “mutual understanding on a wide range of issues”. They also pointed out the closeness or coincidence of positions of Armenia and Turkmenistan on key issues of international politics.

At a joint press conference with Berdimuhamedov, Sargsyan expressed his satisfaction with “dynamically developing Armenian-Turkmen relations” and hoped that trade and economic cooperation between the two countries will be stepped up in accordance with the level of political relations existing between them.

The Armenian president also touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement. “I again presented our principle-based position on the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement: the problem can be solved exclusively through peaceful means, on the basis of norms and principles of international law. The right of the people of Karabakh to self-determination is indisputable and their factual organization should be fixed de jure. We are thankful to Turkmenistan for the understanding it has shown and for its neutrality in this issue that is of the greatest importance to us,” President Sargsyan underscored, according to his press service.

Later on Tuesday Turkmen President Berdimuhamedov organized an official reception in honor of the visiting Armenian leader.

During his visit to Ashgabat President Sargsyan also visited the mausoleum of Turkmenistan’s first president Saparmurat Niayazov (Turkmenbashi), a mosque and monument to the Constitution.
