An agreement has been reached on Armenia’s participation in the peacekeeping mission in Mali, Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan said during a May 12 press conference at one of the military units of Noyemberyan.

Armenia thus continues to contribute to the maintenance of global security. At present, Armenian peacekeepers are already involved in similar missions in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Lebanon.

“Now there is an agreement to have another officer of the Armenian armed forces sent to Mali in June or July,” Minister Ohanyan said, according to Armenpress news agency.

The latest conflict in Mali broke out in 2012. The government of the western African nation asked for foreign military help to re-take areas of the country captured by Islamist militants. A ceasefire agreement in the conflict was reached in February this year, but sporadic terrorist attacks in Mali still occur there.
