Yerevan Votes 2013: Ruling party sweeps municipal elections

Armenia’s ruling Republican Party (RPA) has scored a landslide victory in the Sunday elections to Yerevan’s Council of Elders, giving its top candidate Taron Margaryan another four-year term as mayor.


The Central Election Commission early on Monday presented the preliminary data received from all 464 polling stations across the Armenian capital, showing President Serzh Sargsyan’s RPA winning the elections with 55.89 percent (235,512) of the vote.

Only two of the six remaining participants managed to clear the election hurdle and enter the city’s municipal assembly. The Prosperous Armenia Party of tycoon Gagik Tsarukyan got 23.07 percent of the vote (97,189) and the opposition bloc, Hello Yerevan, formed by supporters of Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian, finished a distant third with 8.48 percent (35,732) of the vote.

The opposition Armenian National Congress party polled 4.39 percent (18,499) of the vote, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) – 3.8 percent (15,999), Orinats Yerkir - 3.73 percent (15,733) and the Mission party – 0.64 percent (2,692).
