Orinats Yerkir congratulates City Council election winners, signals violations

A junior member of the current governing coalition, Orinats Yerkir, which failed to clear the hurdle in the Sunday elections to the Yerevan City Council, has congratulated the three forces that did overcome the threshold, including the main ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA).

According to the preliminary results published by the Central Election Commission on Monday, the RPA won the elections with nearly 56 percent of the vote, followed by the Prosperous Armenia Party (about 23 percent) and the Hello Yerevan opposition bloc (about) 8.5 percent.

The opposition Armenian National Congress, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun), Orinats Yerkir and the Mission party could not gather enough votes to overcome the six-percent barrier.

In its statement Orinats Yerkir accepted the election outcome, but said: “Widespread distribution of election bribes, active involvement of ‘neighborhood guys’, which caused an atmosphere of fear in numerous administrative districts of Yerevan, have left a trace on the elections.”
