January Sees Increase in Benefits

As of this month, pensions will be increased for the approximately half-million retirees, whose government benefits will increase from 28,700 drams (about $75), to 31,300 drams (about $82).

The minimum pension will also be raised by 24 percent, to 13,000 drams (about $34) and an increase in benefits to low-income families (approximately 105,000 such families), to 29,350 drams (about $76).

While the government of Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan extends the increases as support for the vast part of the population, oppositionists criticize the move as a gesture that falls short of meeting the needs of those yet below the poverty line, who especially suffer the effects of continuing and frequent rises in the cost of living.
