Tax privileges granted to Dilijan International School

The Armenian parliament on Wednesday endorsed tax and customs privileges to the Dilijan International School (DIS) program.

DIS will become the first top level international boarding in Armenia for children aged 13-18.

The bill was passed by a vote of 85 to 5 with 20 abstentions. In accordance with the legislation, all organizations recognized as program implementers will be exempted from income taxes during transactions with non-resident companies.

The program has been criticized by opposition and civil society groups insisting that education in all schools in the territory of Armenia should be in Armenian, while the main language of instruction at DIS will be English.

The DIS Board of Trustees met in the resort town of Dilijan earlier this month. It announced that the school will open its doors to its first students in September 2014 and, at full capacity, will be able to admit 650 students from at least 60 countries.
