Chess: Hrant Melkumyan comes second in European Rapid Championship

Armenian grandmaster Hrant Melkumyan has won a silver medal in European rapid championships that took place in Minsk, Belarus.

Melkumyan, who is a member of the Armenian national team, scored 9.5 points, half a point short of Russian grandmaster Ivan Popov.

The highest-placed of the other five Armenian chess players who took part in the tournament was Tigran Petrosyan shared 6th position (9 points).

In the blitz tournament Armenian GMs Zaven Andriasyan, Hrant Melkumyan and Tigran Petrosyan shared the 5th-8th places with 16.5 points.

A total of 604 chess players took part in the competitions.
