Armenia’s US-born alpine skier Ani-Matilda Serebrakian finished a difficult downhill run in ladies’ slalom Friday only to learn that her effort had been disqualified by the event’s judges. This was the second failed attempt of the 21-year-old sophomore at the University of San Francisco to get her name into the finishers’ standings in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

But for the disqualification decision (reflecting the Armenian alpine skier’s mistake while on the downhill course), Serebrakian would have placed 68th among 87th contestants 16 of whom either did not finish or were likewise disqualified. In her previous appearance at Whistler Creekside on February 24, Serebrakian “did not finish” in a giant slalom event following the pattern of her teammate Arsen Nersisyan, who failed to complete the event in the previous day’s competition.

The 22-year-old from Tsakhkadzor suffered the same fate in men’s slalom as Serebrakian on Saturday as he was disqualified by the judges. He was one of four (among a total of 102 participants) to be DSQ’d. Another 43 “did not finish”, while one athlete “did not start.”

Two Armenian athletes had earlier competed in cross-country skiing, finishing well outside the leading pack in cross-country skiing.

Kristine Khachatryan, a 20-year-old from Gyumri, finished 76th (34:17.5) among 78 participants in the ladies’ 10-kilometer race on February 15.

The same day, Sergey Mikaelyan, a 17-year-old from Ashotsk, did a little better in a 15-kilometer cross country race among men finishing 70th among 95 participants with the result of 37:58.9 – 4:22.6 outside the top finisher from Switzerland.
