Sport: Armenia celebrates Tae Kwon Do success

Armenian Tae Kwon Do fighters have staged an impressive performance at junior championships in Kharkiv, Ukraine, winning two medals, including one gold.


Haykaz Samvelyan (58 kg) beat all his competitors, including in the final, to become the continent’s champion among fighters aged 18-21, according to the Championships official website (www.tkd2010.eu).

Another Armenian fighter, Henrik Mejlumyan (54 kg), reached the semifinal, where he lost and had to settle for a bronze medal.

Armenia had its first major international success in Tae Kwon Do only as recently as two years ago.

Arman Yeremyan (78 kg) became Europe’s champion in the sport in April 2008.
