Fighting successes: Armenian athletes win medals in sambo, judo

The European Junior Sambo Championships were held in Bucharest, Romania, on April 5-9, with Armenian team members wining a total of 11 medals, including one gold, two silvers and eight bronze.

(Sambo, a Russian acronym for unarmed self-defense, is a hand-to-hand fighting system popular in former Soviet and Eastern Bloc countries.)

According to the Armenian Sambo Federation, Armenia finished 3rd among 21 nations in the team competition, following teams from Russia and Georgia, respectively.

Armenia’s Gor Malayan (56kg) won the European title, Jivan Ghazaryan (48kg) and Maxim Manukyan (52kg) won silver medals.

The bronze medalists include Grigor Mkhitaryan, Hovhannes Alexanyan, Edik Petrosyan, Roza Khachatryan, Lendrush Zatikyan, Rafik Manukyan, Suren Garnikyan and Mher Karapetyan.
Meanwhile, junior Armenian judoka also won medals at European-level competitions in recent days.

Panarmenian.net quotes Armenia’s Judo Federation as saying that during the Youth and Junior Judo European Championships held in Salonika, Greece, and Tver, Russia, Armenia’s Arsen Tovmasyan (60kg) won a silver medal, while Albert Mkrtchyan (66kg), Harutyun Dermishyan (55kg) and Garik Harutyunyan (55kg) won bronze.
