Vote 2013: Hayrikyan withdraws court application for election delay

Opposition presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan has withdrawn his application to the Constitutional Court for next week’s ballot to be postponed for a two-week period, his lawyer confirmed to ArmeniaNow today.

Hayrikyan, who is now recovering in hospital after surviving an apparent assassination attempt on January 31, formally filed the application Sunday afternoon seeking a delay due to being unable to conduct a full-scale campaign.

The Court was to decide later today whether it would accept it for consideration or not.

In applying to the Court on Sunday Hayrikyan made it clear that he would take it back if the other opposition candidates, including former prime minister Hrant Bagratyan and Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian, rallied around him for a single bid to win presidency.

None of the candidates appears to have indicated his intension to endorse Hayrikyan as a single candidate in the ballot scheduled for February 18.
